Colt Python Double Action, .357 Mag. cal., w/nickel finish, 2 1/2 in. barrel, serial number E13725 – mfg. 1970. Note serrated ramp front sight, adj. target rear sight, Rampant Colt marked frame, checkered hammer, serrated trigger, and checkered walnut grips with silver Colt medallions. Colt double action revolvers with short barrels and nickel finish, especially those in .22 LR cal., have become very desirable in recent years. While hard to imagine, some Diamondbacks in .22 LR cal. with nickel finish and a 2 1/2 in. barrel have sold in excess of $10,000 recently, making a factory letter mandatory for these rare (and expensive) configurations. This Python appears unfired with no problems and includes the original two-piece Colt wood grain box numbered to the gun. Every year, original boxes become more important when determining value for major trademark firearms described as in NIB condition. Remember - for "boxed" guns (especially with pre-WWII mfg.) there are significant differences in value between an original box numbered to the gun (most desirable), an original non-matching or unnumbered box from the same circa (less desirable), a factory box for a different model or circa (add for box only), or an outright fake (recent reproduction that adds no value). So be careful before paying a premium for a firearm advertised as "includes box," as it could mean almost anything.
