REMINGTON

Current manufacturer and trademark established in 1816, with factories currently located in Ilion, NY, Lonoke, AR, Mayfield, KY, and Huntsville, AL.
Remington was founded by Eliphalet Remington II and originally located in Litchfield, Herkimer County, NY circa 1816-1828. Remington established a factory in Ilion, NY next to the Erie Canal in 1828, and together with his sons Philo, Samuel, and Eliphalet III pioneered many improvements in firearms manufacturing. Corporate offices were moved to Madison, NC in 1996. DuPont owned a controlling interest in Remington from 1933-1993, when the company was sold to Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, a New York City based finance company. The Mayfield, KY plant opened in 1997. On May 31st, 2007, a controlling interest in the company was sold to Cerberus Capital Management and Remington Arms along with Bushmaster, DPMS, and Cobb Manufacturing was renamed the Freedom Group. In December, 2007, Remington acquired Harrington & Richardson Firearms (H & R), and Marlin Firearms, and the company moved manufacturing to their Remington plant in Ilion, New York.
In 2013, Remington made significant improvements, including the expansion of its ammunition facility, growth of its firearms manufacturing capacity, secured competitive military and law enforcement contracts, and introduced a series of new products including the Ultimate Defense Handgun Ammunition and Model 783 bolt action rifle.
In January 2014, Remington acquired Rohrbaugh Firearms Corp. In February, 2014, Remington announced a major expansion with new manufacturing at the old Chrysler building in Huntsville, AL. In 2015, the Freedom Group holding company was renamed Remington Outdoor Company.
In March, 2018, Remington Arms Co., Inc. entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March, but emerged less than two months later with a creditor approved restructuring plan. However, Remington re-entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection less than two years later in July 2020 and halted all production of firearms. During a bankruptcy auction in September, 2020, Remington was sold to the Roundhill Group, LLC. The new company, called RemArms, officially launched the new line of Remington firearms in September, 2021. In November, 2021 RemArms announced they would be relocating their world headquarters to LaGrange, GA.

The original 1879 Lee Arms catalog advertised a sporting rifle "to be made in the ensuing season". Only a few handmade, tool room model sporters were made at Sharps and at least one of these has the turned down bolt handle, a search of period E. Remington & Sons advertising from 1881 to 1888 has not turned up any mention of Remington Lee sporters, the Keene sporter apparently met the need for a bolt action sporter and any factory Remington Lee sporter from this period should be considered a tool room model.
