SAVAGE ARMS MODEL 1899 Description
improvement of Model 1895 with squared-off front end of breech bolt and cocking indicator as opposed to viewing hole indicator. Early Model 1899s have oblong cocking indicator located on the top of the breech bolt. In approx. 1908, this was changed to a pin on the upper tang. A wide variety of special order features were available including special length barrels (up to 30 in.), pistol grip stocks, checkering, woods, plating, grades of engraving, sights, etc., all of which can command a moderate to sizeable premium.
In 1905 Savage broadened the variety of this model and added the 1899A2, CD, BC, AB, Excelsior, Leader, Crescent, Victor, Rival, Premier, and Monarch (top-of-the-line model). Prices at the time ranged from $21 to $250 - quite a range.
All Model 1899s and 99s fall within the domain of Savage Arms, Inc.
Rifles under ser. no. 90,000 should be inspected before firing for possible receiver cracking at rear left corner.
From 1899-circa 1950, Model 1899s had serial numbers stamped on buttplate, buttstock, and forearm. A factory drilled and tapped Model 1899 has the model nomenclature moved to the left side.
