Smith & wesson Model 29-2 Description

.44 Mag. cal., DA revolver, 3 screw frame, 4, 6 (new 1979), 6 1/2, or 8 3/8 in. barrel, bright blue or nickel finish. Mfg. 1962-1982.

The "S" serial number prefix was used on this model until 1969, at which time the law required a new numbering system, and the serial number prefix was changed to "N". The "S" prefix originally designated the additional hammer block safety.
Approx. 300-400 .44 Magnums with a 5 in. barrel were manufactured between the Pre-Model 29 with a 4 screw frame, and the Model 29-2 with a 3 screw frame. Most models were primarily shipped from 1958-1963.
One 5 1/2 in. variation in nickel finish is known.
