Erskine S. Allin was employed at Springfield Armory circa 1829 and was the master armorer there circa 1847-1878. He patented a muzzleloading to breech loading conversion system in 1865 (known as the Model 1865 alteration), and 5,000 percussion muskets were altered at Springfield Armory.
