Ballard's patented firearms designs were manufactured by six companies: Ball & Williams (circa late 1861-1865), Dwight, Chapin & Co. (circa late 1861-1864), R. Ball & Co. (circa 1865-1866), Merrimack Arms & Manufacturing Co. (circa 1867-1869), and Brown Manufacturing Co. (circa 1869-1873). During 1874, Charles Ballard went into business with his former partner in woodworking, Richard Ball, as a machinist, model maker, and mechanical draftsman. In 1874, Charles Daly of Schoverling & Daly acquired the rights to the Ballard rifle and contracted with John M. Marlin (circa 1875-1881) and subsequently the Marlin Firearms Company (circa 1881-1891) to manufacture various Ballard models. He continued to work until his death in 1901 at the age of 79.
