BURNSIDE, AMBROSE E.

Ambrose Burnside was a Union Army general during the Civil War, conducting several successful campaigns, but also disastrous defeats, including the Battle of Fredericksburg. Burnside was known for his distinctive style of facial hair, which became known as "sideburns," derived from his last name. He was also governor of Rhode Island from 1866-1869. During the founding of the National Rifle Association in 1871, he was chosen to serve as its first president. In 1874, Burnside was elected as a U.S. Senator from Rhode Island, was re-elected in 1880, and served until his death in 1881.
Ambrose Everett Burnside (born May 23, 1824, died September 13, 1881) was an inventor, soldier, railroad executive, industrialist, and politician from Rhode Island. He designed the Burnside carbine and held various patents. Burnside's carbine design eliminated the leaking of hot gas that plagued many of the breech loading weapons of the time.
