.44 MH, .44 Russian, or .44-40 cal., single action revolver, square butt large frame with lanyard loop roll-stamped "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1873" for .44-40 cal., "CALIBRE/.44 MH" for .44 Merwin Hulbert cal., or "RUSSIAN/MODEL" for .44 Russian cal. on the left side, 6 shot cylinder with 3/4 length flutes, 7 in. round barrel roll-stamped "MERWIN HULBERT & Co. New York, U.S.A." followed by patent dates on top and "THE HOPKINS & ALLEN Manufacturing Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A." in one line on left side, integral to barrel fixed round blade front and frame notch rear sights, barrel, cylinder, and frame nickel-plated and hammer, trigger, cylinder latch and trigger guard are color case hardened, two-piece black checkered hard rubber grips, topstrap added, usually has conventional fluting on cylinder, but some have scoop flutes, no wedge in barrel, one screw above trigger. Mfg. circa 1883-1887.
