these are the very first of the U.S. Cavalry models to be recorded in the Colt records and the first ones that can be lettered by the factory. Slightly more than 2,000 were delivered under government contract, and were inspected by John T. Cleveland. A small group of these guns show the initials of Lewis Draper "L.D." stamped on the frames, instead of the normal "J.T.C." There is also an unusually high ratio of Civilian SAAs in this serial range with the condemned "C" mark on the frame, and there is existing correspondence from Colt and to the U.S. Ordnance Dept. complaining that Inspector Lt. David A. Lyle was being unduly hard to please. Lewis Draper was a temporary replacement during this period. Regardless, this small group of "L.D." marked Single Action Cavalrys are an interesting variation and may command a slight premium.
