Many WWI British-series M1911s were exported back to the U.S. following WWI and were converted to .45 ACP. Usually, a "5" has been crossed out of the original cal. designation. This model also had reworks purchased for Royal Air Force. All Government Model Colts sold in England prior to July 1915 were .45ACP with "C" serial number prefix - approx. 4200 with British War Office purchases of these being 2,200 pistols (most likely issued to Royal Flying Corps (RFC), Royal Navy Air Service, Royal Navy, Royal Horse Artillery). British Ministry of Munitions contracts for the RFC and RAF Colt Government Model .455 in. Webley & Scott Self Loading Calibre pistols with "W" prefix - total 10,500. These were marked RAF.
