9mm Para. cal., double action, 5 in. barrel, 8 shot mag., fixed sights, brown or black composite grips with primarily blue finishes. Many variations exhibiting a variety of metal finishes and codes, 34 oz. Over 1,000,000 manufactured during WWII.
Based on the prototype "Armee Pistol" from 1936, this model was adopted as the standard service pistol of the German Military in 1938 and refined in the "Zero Series". The P.38 was manufactured by Walther - code "480" and "ac" (mfg. April 1940-1945), Mauser - code "byf" and "svw" (mfg. late 1942-1945), and Spreewerk - "cyq" (mfg. 1942-1945). The finish on most WWII 1942 and Later P.38s is not of the same quality as the pre-war and early war Walther guns with the Spreewerk models being the poorest. Note: The cvq stamp is currently thought to be attributed to a broken die which was used intermittently, and not to a Spreewerk code change.
