.357 Magnum/.38 Special cal., introduced in April 15, 1954, double action revolver built on the square butt N target frame with 5 screws, pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. A utility version of the pre-Model 27 with a satin blue finish, this model is the only "N" frame with an adj. rear sight leaf that is not serrated as well as no serrations on the barrel, available with 4 or 6 in. barrel, Magna style or target walnut grips with S&W medallions and diamond around the screw escutcheon. This model has a 6 groove serrated backstrap and forestrap. Has "Highway Patrol" stamped on the barrel, 1/8 in. Baughman Quick Draw front sight with adj. micrometer click rear sight, shrouded extractor rod, .400 in. semi target hammer, .265 in. serrated or .400 in. smooth trigger, original test production marked "PATROLMAN", 8,427 manufactured in the first year of production. Frame change in 1956 to 4 screw at about SN S171584. Mfg. circa 1954-1957, continued as the Model 28. "S" serial prefix.
