1878 BURGESS REPEATING RIFLE (MODEL 1878 WHITNEY-BURGESS-MORSE REPEATING RIFLE) Description
.45-70 Govt. cal., standard sporting rifle, 28 in. octagon or round barrel, barrels marked "G.W. Morse Patented Oct. 28th 1856", blue receiver and full magazine capacity of 9 rounds, walnut stock, loading port on right side, serpentine shaped lever, typically w/o Whitney markings, tangs are marked "A. Burgess Patented Jan. 7th 1873", several variations, including the First, Second, and Third models, as well as military carbines and muskets.

This model was also known as the Whitney-Burgess-Morse lever action repeating rifle, mfg. through a license agreement with Andrew Burgess, total production of approx. 2,000 were made between 1878-1882.
