Christian Sharps was born in 1810 in Washington, NJ. On March 14, 1849, Christian Sharps entered into a contract with Albert Nippes of Mill Creek, PA to manufacture 100-200 Sharps breech loading rifles. The first one was ready by April 20. During August/September of 1850, A.S. Nippes & Co. was formed to manufacture Sharps rifles in Mill Creek. Production consisted of 100 rifles, and manufacture ceased on June 4, 1851. On October 8, 1851, the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company was incorporated, and on January 9, 1852, the company received its first government contract for 200 carbines, plus parts, for just over $6,000. During May, 1853, the Sharps factory opened in Hartford, CT. Production consisted of barrels first, then rifles were assembled with parts made at Windsor.
Manufactured by Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company circa 1851-1855 and located in Windsor, VT. Also manufactured in Hartford, CT under the same name between 1853-1874. Reorganized as Sharps Rifle Company in 1876 with production resuming in Hartford (1876 only) and Bridgeport, CT from 1877-1881.
