.45-70 Govt. cal., 4 shot tube mag., 22 in. barrel, open sights, straight grip stock with curved buttplate, forearm cap, sling and swivels. Mfg. 1972-1984.
Early new Model 1895 Marlins had cut rifling (8 grooves) suitable for cast bullets, while later mfg. was switched to Marlin's "Micro Groove" shallow rifling (12 grooves). Changes were also made from a straight stock to a pistol grip stock and from a traditional receiver to one with the newer hammer- block, push-button safety. Early guns with a straight grip stock, traditional receiver, and cut rifling command premiums over later mfg. Deep cut rifling (ser. no. to approx. 10,000) occurred during the first year of production only. More recently mfg. models have pistol grip, Micro Groove rifling, and hammer-block safety - these newer guns are the least desirable from a collector's standpoint.
