Beginning in 2018, Ruger began transitioning an engineering change within their Redhawk models by eliminating the solid barrel and replacing it with a cold hammer forged sleeve and barrel shroud. The change began occurring in certain Redhawk models by the beginning of the 504- prefix serial number and will eventually be found in all Redhawk models. The new type barrel is identified as a "stepped" looking barrel crown. Old style solid barrels have a flat barrel crown.
