9mm Para. cal., alloy frame, model nomenclature marking on pistol started after ser. no. approx. 2,600, long safety lever and extractor, checkered walnut grips, blue or nickel finish. Mfg. started 1957.
S&W completed one lot of 200 guns for commercial sales with nickel finish, in addition to guns that were produced with nickel finish for special orders. The model change from the Model 39 to the Model 39-2 took place with the change from the long extractor to the new short type. Collectors report an approx. ser. no. range 1001-120000 with long extractor. This model was the first commercially mfg. 9mm Para. double action semi-auto in the U.S.
Models 39 Alloy Frame & Model 39 Alloy Frame Early Mfg. (Pre-39) are intermixed, as is the production of the two variations. There is no positive serial number that can be established when the Model number was added, however it occurred between serial number 2500 and 5000, with the production changes taking place somewhat randomly over the same serial range. It must be remembered that Smith & Wesson did not make pistols in order of serial number. Also the serial numbers are intermixed with the Model 41 pistols and the Model 52. The guns that were submitted for military testing went to the Springfield Armory, and had X prefix serial numbers. The first shipments of Model 39s was in Dec. 1954, the model numbers were assigned in 1957.
