MODEL 1860 NAVY RIFLES Description
.52 Spencer rimfire cal., top of receiver marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860", 7 shot, 30 in. round barrel, brass blade front sight which doubles as bayonet lug and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards, blue finish with color case hardened receiver and lever, smooth walnut straight grip buttstock with steel buttplate, full length walnut forearm with three barrel bands and steel end cap, sling swivels on middle band and bottom of the buttstock, breech end of barrel is marked with an anchor and the serial number is marked on the top rear of the receiver.
Beware: a Collins-produced sword-type bayonet for the Sharps M1859 rifle can be made to fit the Spencer Navy rifle, but it is not a true Spencer Navy bayonet. The rarest of production Spencer firearms, 803 Spencer Model 1860 Navy rifles with sword-type bayonets were produced for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ordnance between 1862 and 1863.
