CARBINE Description

.58 cal., case hardened low hump lockplate in front of hammer marked "CS/RICHMOND, VA" with date (1862, 1863, 1864, or 1865) behind hammer, single shot muzzleloader, 25 in. bright finished round barrel with "VP" over eagle proof near breech, two leaf US M1858 pattern rear sight with "swept wing" leaves and pinched blade front sight, iron mountings with brass buttplate and forend cap, walnut full stock with two barrel bands (stamped "U") with forward mounted springs and three sling swivels (upper barrel band, trigger guard, and buttstock), straight-shank iron ramrod with tulip head, similar to U.S. 1855 and 1861 rifled musket. Mfg. 1864-1865, earlier dated guns are from converted muskets. RF=2.
