.58 cal., case hardened high or low hump lockplate in front of hammer marked "CS/RICHMOND, VA" with date (1861, 1862, 1863, or 1864) behind hammer, single shot, muzzleloader, 40 in. bright finished round barrel with "VP" over eagle proof near breech, two leaf USM1858 pattern rear sight with "swept wing" leaves and combination front sight/socket bayonet lug, iron (early prod.) or brass (later prod.) mountings including buttplate and forend cap, walnut full stock with three barrel bands (stamped "U") with forward mounted springs and two sling swivels (middle band and trigger guard), iron ramrod with tulip head, similar to U.S. 1855 and 1861 rifled musket. Mfg. 1861-1865. RF=1.
