.54 cal. with some examples altered to .58 cal., lockplate marked with eagle, "U.S.", "Springfield" and date, single shot muzzleloader, 22 in. round, rifled barrel with one band, breech marked with "P", "V" or eagle's head and date, two-leaf rear sight, iron mountings, bright metal finish, 3/4 walnut stock, brass forend, button tipped steel ramrod, attached to muzzle by large oval u-shaped iron swivel, large sling ring mounted to rear trigger guard. Approx. 1,000 mfg. circa 1855-1856. RF=3.
