U.S. MODEL 1795 MUSKET - 1ST TYPE Description
.69 cal., lockplate marked with eagle over "U.S." and "Springfield" in curve (circa 1799-1802), eagle over "U.S." in script and "Springfield" in curve (circa 1802-1803), "U.S." over eagle and "Springfield" in horizontal curve (circa 1804), "U.S." over eagle and "Springfield" in curve and "1805" vertically (circa 1805), "U.S." over eagle over "Springfield" in horiztonal curve (circa 1806), single shot, muzzleloader, 44 1/2 in. round smoothbore barrel, marked with "P", small eagle's head, and "V" near breech, 3 barrel bands with bayonet lug on front band, small blade front sight, 56 1/2 in. full stock with flat metal buttplate dated from 1799, ramrod, sling swivels on middle band and trigger guard, 13 in. trigger guard with pointed ends, flat face, beveled edge hammer with curl on top of spur, iron detachable flashpan. Mfg. circa 1799-1806. RF=2 (w/out permanent socket bayonet), RF=1 (with permanent socket bayonet).
This model was a copy of the French Model 1763 known as "Charleville Pattern" musket and was manufactured by various sub-contractors. Independent sub-contractors have the following markings: "PB" (Peter Brong & Company - see separate listing), "E.BUELL"(Elisha Buell - see separate listing), "CANTON", "CASWELL & DODGE", "E.D. & CO.", "H.H." (Hosea Humphreys - see separate listing), "PICKELL", "A. PRATT", "SCITUATE/1800". Values are similar to this Springfield U.S. Model 1795 Musket.
